Tuesday was the first day we began planting in the courtyard. Our teacher showed us all the plants we would be planting during our horticulture class. She showed us lemon balm, French and English lavender and a curry plant. These all appealed to our sense of smell.

We were then shown wild grass for touch and mint, sage, chives and thyme for taste.

We then went out to the courtyard and began weeding the flowerbeds. We tossed the soil with a trowel, a shovel a fork and a rake to make sure all the unwanted growth was gone.

Then, we each got a pansie and had to plant it in the flower bed. We learned that pansies were sexually confused plants. This explains why they are two colours. We had to plant them an inch in from the edge of the flower bed and an equal distance apart from each other, in a big circle. I first had to dig a hole in the ground using a trowel and put a handful of compost in it. I then broke up the bottom bit of soil from the pansie and placed it in. Because they were only young, we had to be very careful when filling the soil and compost in around it. We had all officially planted our first plant during horticulture. |
